Publishing Survey

Sally Haslanger has put together a survey on publishing, and she’d like any professional philosophers to take it. It should take about 10 minutes. It will be useful to have your CV handy as you fill it out. Please go here to find it:

If all goes well, Sally Haslanger will report on the results at the December APA in the symposium on philosophy publishing (Wednesday December 30th, 11:15-1:15).

So…thanks to all who have responded to the survey! It has been brought to my attention that the initial question on the survey wasn’t capturing everyone we want. It suggested you needed to have a PhD in philosophy and a teaching job. But we want Emeritus/Emerita, people who hold research positions, and others who don’t have a PhD (but only have a rough equivalent). So the first question has been altered. If you were rejected the first time you tried, please try again, and if you can’t get on with the computer you used before, try another computer. Sorry for our confusion!

    Kids,

To “pastiche” Yul Brynner: don’t publish too much, don’t publish too much. Even if you have a “slammin’” body and a famous father, “restraint” with respect to publication of serious intellectual material like philosophy — although, in fact, this may go for philosophy less than for other fields — is the “mark” of a mature and responsible author such as should wield intellectual “clout”; as you all do, and reasonably-enough in my book, though it might in fact be true (as Will Smith once said in propria persona as his mother “‘Cause they’re not good friends”).

Don’t be like Jeffrey Daniel Rubard and friends; think before you “style” as a man of the left, or a “disingenuous ingenue”. No reason to as a “fresh face”, although if you’re 30 and haven’t written your book yet…

    Have a happy holiday season.
