This is the kind of

This
is the kind of thing that warms the cockles of my heart.

Over
at dailykos.com
there was a long debate about the meaning of a particular poll. (See the
comments section, esp towards the end, or around Jan 9 9:00pm if you want a
less indexical reference.) There had been a brief flurry of excitement about a
poll that had 56% of people not voting for GWB at the next Presidential
election. It turned out that what really happened was that a bunch of people
were asked whether they would vote for the glorious leader whomever the
Democratic challenger is, and 56% said no. This of course doesn’t imply that
56% plan to vote against him in any particular scenario, let alone any
conceivable scenario, let alone in all
conceivable scenarios, which is what some wishful liberals concluded.

Getting
back to the point, the dispute was clarified, and eventually resolved, by the
person who spelled it all out formally using quantifiers and operators. Sometimes it seems like everything we do
is worthwhile.

          — You mean some things we do?
          — Guess so.
