I had a dream about one of my co-bloggers last night. I dreamt that Andy Egan (whom I haven’t seen since Canberra in July) came to stay in my apartment in St Louis. Shortly after he arrived, a woman claiming to be Adam Elga’s ex-wife knocked on the back door, along with two small boys, demanding to see their father. (To the best of my knowledge, Adam’s never been married and doesn’t have any small children, although what do I know? Anyway, I just mean: don’t take my dreamt up family for Adam to have any bearings on his real life situation.) I told her that Adam wasn’t there, (although the other AE was) and then one of the children tore up the place looking for him.

The Princeton Department used to have a (virtual) dream book for (anonymous) logging of dreams involving philosophers or philosophy. Some of the best included:

A) the one were the dreamer just couldn’t get to the last level on their computer game, and then David Lewis showed him/her how to do it, after which the game revealed “the things in themselves” – tiny creatures who lived on a shelf in David’s office

B) the one where the dreamer found out that the department didn’t award PhDs to Jews. The dreamer couldn’t believe it at first, and alleged Gideon Rosen and Paul Benacerraf as counterexamples, but then their informant dealt the master blow: why do you think they’re both teaching at Princeton? It’s because they can’t teach anywhere else – they don’t have PhDs! (This is all dreamworld nonsense of course – both Rosen and Benacerraf have PhDs from Princeton.)

C) The one where the dreamer is sitting in a roadside cafe with David Lewis and for some reason it is incredibly important to keep the conversation going. Something terrible will happen if there is a pause of any length. David is aware of the situation and doing his best, but the dreamer is still petrified that a pause will come and he won’t be able to think of anything to say.

My appolgies if my memories of these dreams aren’t quite accurate – it’s been a couple of years. Does anyone have any others? (Any offerings which are i) non-PG rated or ii) likely to make identifiable individuals uncomfortable will be removed!)
