a recent Colorado grad now teaching at Wyoming, has a quite extensive collection of papers on epistemology, philosophy of language, and especially their overlap, on his website. It looks like there is some good stuff there, worth checking out.

Does anyone know who was John Rawls’s PhD dissertation advisor? This question came up in discussion around here (a propos of nothing much at all) and no one knew, but I imagine at least one reader will know.

Rawls’s dissertation supervisor was Walter Stace. At least, that’s what Thomas Pogge says in an essay called “A Brief Sketch of Rawls’s Life,” reprinted in Richardson and Weithman, The Philosophy of Rawls: Development and Main Outlines of Rawls’s Theory of Justice (Garland, 1999). Apparently, Rawls also worked with Norman Malcolm and Max Black (author of that wonderful book, The Prevelance of Humbug and other Essays.)

In the comments on my old post on Placement rates for philosophy departments, Richard Heck notes that the success rates of departments listed don’t correlate very well with Leiter rankings. It’s nice work, and another piece of data for incoming grad students to consider.

In the comments to this post, Richard Heck responds to a few of the arguments Brian Leiter made here and here in defence of the PGR. Being a wimpy Milquetoast, I don’t want to enter into the fray. I was thinking about what happened to my theory of vagueness if one dropped the constraint that all contradictions are perfectly false. The logic that one gets is actually rather interesting, but I don’t see any reason to believe that it’s the right theory of vagueness.
